The successful founder, Huang Jin, was a lover of poetry. He often hosted literati and scholars, serving exquisite pastries to accompany tea and poetry. Among these, the “Phoenix Eye Cake” was highly praised for its elegant shape and delicate texture.
In 1877 (the 3rd year of Emperor Guangxu’s reign), the “Yu Jen Jai” pastry shop was established, named after his study. For over a century, we have continuously developed a variety of pastries, preserving our heritage to this day.
Carrying forward the flavors of several generations, our craftsmanship remains meticulous. Today, these delicacies are no longer exclusive treats for scholars, but a must-buy souvenir for travelers visiting Lukang—a joyful treat everyone can easily enjoy.
While many perceive “Yu Jen Jai” as a brand defined by “nostalgia” and “tradition,” we have always evolved with the times while preserving our heritage.Since our establishment, we have never been complacent. To ensure that traditional culture is not overwhelmed by modern trends, we continue to move forward, firmly believing that all innovation is for the sake of preserving tradition.Through years of dedicated research and development, we have introduced products like “Chess Pastries (You-Yi Cake)” and reformulated recipes with reduced sugar and oil. This is why the aroma of Yu Jen Jai’s pastries has endured for over a century.
Located at the entrance of the bustling Lukang Old Street, Wan Shu Fang was originally two dilapidated historic houses. Mr. Huang Yi-bin, the proprietor of Yu Jen Jai, could not bear to see these old buildings abandoned. He collaborated with historians to restore them, preserving their original architectural beauty.
The name “Wan” (翫) embodies the sophisticated lifestyle of the literati, finding joy in art and leisure. We hope visitors can experience the refined pleasures of the past in this space. Besides serving tea and pastries, we offer the traditional board game “Huluwen” for guests to enjoy, and host interactive events related to local culture from time to time.
In line with Yu Jen Jai’s core values, promoting Lukang and revitalizing historic buildings have long been our goals. We hope to deepen public understanding of the rich history and cultural heritage of Lukang.
